    IELTS Test

    What is it?

Students and adults who need to study or seek jobs in countries and territories which recognise the English language as their ultimate mode of instruction and command are required to give the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), which evaluates the understanding and skills in the language of the candidates.

If you’re somebody who is seeking college admission or training programs in the countries of Australia, the UK, Canada and New Zealand, taking this test is important as a criterion for getting in. Most professional units, administrative bodies and authorities of immigration take this test as compulsory.

The IELTS test is managed and controlled by three prominent organisations including the IDP: IELTS Australia, British Council, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL).

    What does it comprise?

The basics of the English language including reading, writing, speaking and listening are tested.

    Centres worldwide administer this test.

Is Australia part of your college admission options? The IELTS examination has been declared mandatory for potential students there.

What is the format of the test IELTS?

Two formats revolve around the testing interface: General Training and Academic

    General Training

General Training is for candidates who aspire to study, work or simply immigrate.

This format lays focus on the simplest skills of the language that make social and communication relationships easier. Generally, candidates willing to acquire secondary education, training programs and gather some work experience take up this test.

However, there is a possibility that some organisations and institutions demand academic level training for immigration and employment.

    Academic

Academic Training revolves around candidates who seek higher education like universities and colleges.

This format is for candidates wishing to apply to colleges and institutions that have incorporated English as their medium of instruction. If you’re seeking admission to undergraduate and postgraduate colleges, this training becomes compulsory for you.

The Listening and Speaking test sections do not change between the two formats. Nevertheless, the Reading and Writing modules change. The theorems have been summarised in the table below.

    Academic Training

    General Training

The Listening portion includes 4 Sections, 40 questions and 30 minutes.

The Listening portion remains the same with 4 Sections, 40 questions and 30 minutes

The Reading includes 3 sections, 40 questions and 60 minutes

The Reading includes 3 sections, 40 questions, 60 minutes

Here, the Writing involves 2 tasks, 60 minutes

Whereas in General, Writing: 2 tasks, 60 minutes

Speaking here is tested by 11-14 minutes

Speaking is tested by 11-14 minutes

    IELTS Scoring Criteria

The IELTS does not render candidates as pass or fail. There is a grading system instead, which evaluates your score in the four fields of reading, writing, listening and speaking, on a scale of 1 to 9. After this, there is an overall Band Score which gives you your ultimate performance grade.

Consistent evaluation takes place using this authentic 9-band system as and when you give your test. Being internationally approved and known, the test gives you an ultimate assurance.

What is the IELTS 9-band scale?

Each band of evaluation correlates to the performance of the candidate in all of the English streams. The band score can be evaluated in both wholes and point streams.

    How are the bands defined?

    • Band 9 enlists an Expert user who has a complete command of the language. The candidate hence evaluated has been tested and found of accurate, real and fluent English and has a complete comprehension of it.
    • Band 8 refers to a very good user. This implies that the user has completely acquired operational command but has a few occasional inaccuracies that are not systematic. This band implies that there may be slight misunderstandings in certain situations but the user can aptly handle complicated and detailed debate conversations.
    • Band 7 defines a good user. The owner of this has operational command of the language. However, they have inaccuracies and misunderstandings in certain situations. There are no issues in understanding and handling complex social conversations and reasoning.
    • Band 6 defines a competent user. Here, the user most of the time declares effective command of the language but also has certain misunderstandings and inaccuracies. The person is capable of using, handling and working with fairly complicated language and does well in situations familiar to them.
    • Band 5 lists a modest user. The user hence has incomplete commands and can cope with the overall meaning of phrases, despite some misunderstandings and is likely to make mistakes often. The person can be expected to take care of basic familiar situations.
    • Band 4 defines a limited user. His or her understanding is limited to only known situations and the person suffers from understanding concepts usually. The person is limited to using simple language only.
    • Band 3 names an extremely limited user. The user can converse the general meaning only in situations especially known to them. The person is prone to frequent breakdown of communications.
    • Band 2 defines an intermittent user. Here, there is hardly any real communication and the user is competent of only delivering isolated words to meet immediate requirements. The person experiences a lot of hardships understanding written and spoken English.
    • Band 1 is a non-user. This implies that the person is completely remote of the language and cannot use it at all, except for a few isolated words and non-sense sentences.
    • Band 0 implies that the user has not given the test yet, and his or her performance hence cannot be evaluated.

FAQs and Facts that revolve around the IELTS

Why are there two formats of IELTS?

IELTS has two formats, as aforementioned. This includes Academic and General Training. The Academic test is for candidates seeking education at a tertiary level in a country where English is usually the command language.

The General Training test is for candidates seeking work experience or training programs. It also covers secondary school or migration to a country where English is the language of command. While the listening and speaking tests remain the same, there is a distinction between the reading and writing tests amidst the two types of training.

How do you decide which training to take?

Educate yourself about the two types of training thoroughly. Contact your target institution or organization and gather information about their requirements. Note which training suits you best.

How long does the test last?

The total duration of the test is 2 hours 45 minutes. The Listening, Reading and Writing tests are carried out at once. The Speaking test, however, may take place on the same day or up to a week pre or post the others.

What is the total cost of the test?

For registering for the IELTS test, you need to pay a sum of INR 12,650 since April 01, 2018.

When are the test results given out?

The results are declared after 13 days of you giving all the tests. No matter which test centre, all post your results. It is important to keep your IELTS test report safely with you. Some centres offer an SMS facility for alerts and online result declaration, too.
