    IELTS Speaking

The speaking test of the IELTS exam is taken by an expert examiner in the form of an interview. It lasts for 11 to 14 minutes. The interviewer records and limits the time for the discussion. The candidate should carry identification proof. The candidates are to be formally dressed as it is a formal interview.

This section is divided into three parts, each comprising a specific question. The basis on which the candidates' answers are checked corresponds to the fluency, accuracy, lexical resources, grammatical range, and pronunciation.

Different Sections on the IELTS Speaking

    Part 1

    4-5 minutes

The test-taker will ask for an introduction. They will check the identification proof of the candidate by asking the same. They ask questions based on familiar topics such as work-study hobbies, daily family routine, etc.

The test covers the candidate's ability to produce information.

    Part 2

    3-4 minutes

In the second part, a specific question is asked. Hence, the interviewee needs to talk for two minutes. The examiner will provide a booklet with a task, which will list out different points to be included. One minute is allotted to prepare the talk. A pencil and paper will be provided for preparation. The time is maintained with the help of a stopwatch telling the candidates when to start and stop.

This section tests the length of the speaking ability of the candidate. Judgement of the use of correct language, organization of ideas, phrases, and fluency is done. This section will analyze a candidate's ability to speak.

    Part 3

    4-5 minutes

The examiner will ask more in detail and conceptual questions concerning the topics in part 2 in this part; however, the questions will become harder to answer.

In this part, the ability of the candidate to convey an opinion, examine a problem or discuss a viewpoint is reviewed.

    IELTS Speaking pattern

The assessment is based on four parts, i.e., the points kept in mind by the examiner while giving marks. There are four criteria for examining your performance. This refers to the things that the examiner thinks about when scoring you.

    • Fluency and coherence
    • Lexical resource
    • Grammatical range and correctness
    • Pronunciation

The final score of your speaking section is the arithmetic average of these four criteria.
