    The Reading section of the PTE exam is designed to assess your reading skills. You have to read passages and answer various types of questions based on them. 

    You get 32 to 41 minutes to solve this section. But you can decide how much time to spend on each question though.

    Types of Questions asked in the PTE Reading Test

    The PTE Reading test includes four types of questions:

    • Multiple-Choice Questions or MCQs,
    • Reorder Paragraphs
    • Reading: Fill in the Blanks
    • Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks

    Multiple-Choice Questions or MCQs

    In the PTE Reading exam, 2-3 questions are multiple-choice questions. The given passage can be up to 300 words. You have to read it and choose one or more correct answers for it.

    They assess a student’s reading skills.

    Reorder Paragraphs

    2-3 questions are of this type. The passage is up to 150 words. The paragraphs are placed in a random order in the left column. You have to drag and drop them in the right column - in the correct order.

    They assess a student's reading skills.

    Reading: Fill in the Blanks

    4-5 questions are of the type where you see a passage of up to 80 words. It has multiple gaps. You need to drag and drop the correct words in these gaps to fill in the blanks. 

    These questions assess a candidate's reading skills.

    Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks

    5-6 questions are of this type. You get a passage of up to 300 words. There are fill in the blanks based on it. You have to choose the correct word from a drop-down box next to the blank.

    These questions assess a candidate's reading and writing skills.

    You get partial credit for all these questions. It means you score even if the partial answer is correct.

    Experts Tips to solve different types of questions in the PTE Reading Test

    Multiple-Choice Questions or MCQs

    In this section, you will get a passage. You will have to read it carefully, and then answer the question. The questions have multiple options. They can be of different types:

    • MCQs with a single correct answer come with a passage that is up to 110 words long. 
    • MCQs with multiple correct answers come with a passage that is up to 300 words long.

    Things to Remember

    • These questions aim to evaluate a candidate’s reading skills. Hence, you should read the passage and questions carefully.
    • Read the question and the given options first.
    • Then, read the passage to choose the correct option/s.
    • Do not spend more than 2 minutes on such a question.

    Reorder Paragraphs Type Questions

    In this section, you need to re-arrange the given paragraphs in the right order. 

    Things to Remember

    • Reading through all the paragraphs will give you an idea of how to arrange them.
    • Our experts advise that mostly paragraphs with adverbs and connectors are not the first ones.
    • If the text mentions ‘years’, arranging them in chronological order may work.

    Fill in the Blanks Type Questions for Reading Skills

    In this section, there’s a passage or a paragraph with several blanks. Below the text, you see several words. You need to drag the correct word and drop it in the right blank. You get points for each word you place correctly.

    Things to Remember

    • Gleam through the entire text quickly.
    • Read each sentence with a blank carefully.
    • Knowing whether you need a noun, verb, or adjective to complete the sentence is a good hint at which word to choose.

    Fill in the Blanks Type Questions for Reading & Writing Skills

    In this section too, the passage has several blanks. Against each blank, you get a dropdown section with several word options. Choose the appropriate word.

    Things to Remember

    • With enough reading and writing practice, this task becomes easy.
    • Excellent vocabulary is crucial to answering this question correctly.
    • Often, word options are synonyms. Knowing the correct meanings of words will help you choose the right answer.
